Failed Potty Training and a New Project

I don't know if anyone else has failed in potty training like I have but I thought Gideon was going to be potty trained early at like one and a half, he acted interested and he could go on the potty...but here we are with him over 2 and a half and I feel like a failure! I know it's not really me completely and I'm trying to just wait till he is ready now but still it is frustrating! So I've stepped back from big boy underwear to a form of trainer underwear. Now I don't know if you've noticed but Pull-Ups cost $10 for like 20...that is insane! So I decided to make a few trainer underwear for Gideon out of fleece and PUL and we are going to try that for a while. I have five pair done and I'm pretty pleased, they are cute and we will see if they work well. Tirzah acts more interested in the potty than Gideon and I would not be surprised if she was potty trained before Gideon...as for now it looks like we will have three in diapers!

  1. Hi Stephanie,
My guess is that Gideon isn't ready yet. Aaron was like that. I was expecting Natty, Asher was still in diapers - and so was Aaron. He was almost 3! So Natty when was born, I had 3 children in diapers. Ugh!! But by the time she was 3 weeks old, Aaron was completely potty trained. He decided he was ready (I had been ready for months!lol), and I was relieved. :) That whole situation made me realize that when I'm "ready" doesn't mean that my child will be. ;)
    Love you guys!

  2. Don't be discouraged, Stephanie! I'm sure Gideon just isn't ready. I'm learning that every child is so different in that area. The trainers you made look wonderful! I wish I had your sewing skills! I'm going to have to figure out some trainers myself because I want to start trying to potty train Jack. I'm going to be flexible though, because he may not be ready either.
    You're an awesome mommy!

  3. Stephanie, don't be discouraged! He is just not ready and when he is, it will be so easy. One of mine wasn't ready until they were almost 3.5. But guess what? When J~ was ready, it happened in one day and a diaper was never needed again, even at night!

  4. Oh you have not failed Steph! Potty training is so tricky! One min they seem like they are ready next min they are not! Just watch him for clues I guess! My sisters tried and put my nieces and nephews on the potty everyday at the same time and that made them go almost consistently!Maybe you can try that?

  5. Aww, Stephanie! Your post sounds exactly like the thoughts that have been swirling through my head for months! I've been working on Rafe since he was around 1 1/2 too...like Gideon he seemed to be taking to it and doing well--but now he's not that interested. We haven't even gotten to Pull-Ups yet! I have a bunch (actually brought them all with me from Hawaii, ha ha) and we've used one here and there, but he's not consistent enough even for those. >.< It's been kind of frustrating because I was really hoping we'd conquer this during the deployment (after he adjusted to Corey being gone), so we wouldn't go backwards again after Corey got home...not looking like it's going to happen now. *sigh* Must. Be. Patient.
